Happy with the little things.
There is really nothing that motivates me to do my office work at this moment. Sadly, so common a thing such as Money has become the center of many lives. For one thing, some of us are just more fortunate than others, if only they knew and did something in their position, rather than complain about how this world’s not good enough for them.
I was just dreaming, if I was the rich folk, what would I have done differently? I’d be by the pool all day, do some social work in the evenings, buy an island off Brazil, build schools for the poor, save the trees, invent a new fuel, save the world, host Beauty Pageants… (instead of wasting money on a club called Chelsea). As I said, I was just dreaming.
For one thing, it is almost impossible for a Singaporean to break into the top 10 richest men in the world. Our Government policies simply don’t allow extortion and world domination. For example, even a simple thing like start-up Cash to start a business is limited to companies that show a good financial record of 2 years. So, the question is, how does a local firm start off if it needs to have started off in the first place?!? The Government’s full of paradoxical policies aren’t they??? A wise man once said: ‘full of shit!’.
Ok, so we can’t get excessively and disgustingly rich here. But surely, there is some form of life encouragement policy in place!? For example the 5 days working week!!! Hooray for common sense!!! And so it seems… Our policy makers obviously think that announcing a policy that presumably gives us work life balance would be enough. They naturally feel that it would create more time to make babies, and thus, more time to spend with the babies we make. My guess is that policy makers don’t live in their own policies. Fact of the matter is, people here though comfortable, can possibly never achieve a life where the focus is on freedoms and rights. We simply do not have this libertarian culture incorporated in our blood.
On this island I call home, it’s about taxes, ERP and administration fees. I must however, applaud the comfortable (but increasingly expensive) way of living the Government has provided for us. Stability is our forte, our pillar upon which the country survives, and that is why so few actually attempt to shake it. Which is good. I’m just sad for the limited freedom of opportunity and choice.
At least the girls are dressing and looking better. Haha…
Right, as I was saying, the sustained paradoxical policies and the lack of opportunity and choices and the absolutely uncompromising fact that I’ll be stuck here on this 647.5 Sq kilometer piece of land with the rest of 4 million people for a long long time, means we have to adjust our mentality right down to that of simplicity.
So, the latest adaptation is ‘Be Happy with the little things’.
Remember stories from our parents about how happy an occasion it was when they had chicken on the dinner table? Or we as children (from existing memory) were so excited at receiving our first Atari set? Or the joy of the first kiss? Or the ecstasy of the first Transformer (I remember mine was Mirage!!! You know?? The blue sports car robot??!! Haha….) Ok…so, as I mentioned, if we allow the little things to make us happy, it would breed happiness and we wouldn’t be sulking all day…even if the male to female population remains at 1:1 (think 10 years ago was 1 male to 3 females!!! Damn it!!).
Be happy with the little things.
